What is it that inspires you to ride Flatland over the other disciplines of
riding?
I love how diverse Flatland is.  There are so many styles, positions, and
links!  No two Flatlanders are the same.  It’s all up to you.   There is no wrong foot
to scuff with.   You can ride with or without brakes. There is no correct side of the
bike to ride on.  The unlimited possibilities…  The respect you get when people
see you ride. It’s not like someone can grab “your” bike and do a Hang 5, or even
a simple Infinity Roll.  They can try, and I’ve had people do it.  They give the bike
back with a different attitude and respect for you.  They say “Sh-t that is hard!”(R-
E-S-P-E-C-T.)

What frame do you ride, and how is your bike set up?  I ride a Quamen (I
bought it from Lee “Huck” Edwards).  I don’t know the generation or angles either.
Here it is in rider terms→ I have a low set-up.  My seat post is low, and my bars
are sawed off about 2”on each end.  They are about 21” across.

Who do you ride with, and where do you ride?  With my busy schedule, I ride
by myself.  When I get off this crazy schedule, I will start riding with the Chainlinkz
crew.  Oh yeah…Kelly Baldwin is moving about a five minute bike ride down from
me! (Our wives aren’t going to like that too much, but we will stay responsible.) I
ride right outside my front door.  I fight a little bit of traffic, but everyone in town
knows me as the guy on the bike, so they slow down or stop, and let me finish my
link, give me a honk or thumbs up, and drive on.  When I get off this project at
work, I’ll be back at the Pearland Park!
What is your name?  Cesar Calderõn

How old are you?  34 years old

What do you do for a living?  My title is an NDT Tech!  I’m a Piping Inspector out at Dow.  I
use an instrument that shoots sound waves through a piece of pipe.
This instrument will let me know how thick the wall of the pipe is.  I also draw the piping
diagrams. (Maps of pipes at Dow)

How long have you been riding Flatland?  Since I was 13 years old! (8th grade)My first
Flatland bike was a black and red Haro Sport with white mags. Two sets of pegs, on the axles,
and some fold out pegs higher up on the forks.  All in all, about 15 years of Flatlanding!
Who is your favorite rider, and why?  Martii Kuoppa…He does such hard tricks,
and has a  rough “balls to the wall” style.   You know…It looks like he’s going to lose
a trick, then he just keeps linking something else rough and ugly!  I’ve never met or
seen him ride at a competition, but I will… (Hint, hint to Scott Obrien; invite Martii to
Voodoo!) It’s like Martii rides hard all the time, injured or not.  He’s like the M.
Hoffman of Flatlanding.

What do you like better; Comps or Jams?  I would have to say jams, because if
you approach someone at a comp, they may want to stay focused, and may not
want to talk too much.  At jams, you can stop to say what’s up, talk about tricks, get
autographs, take pics, shoot videos, etc., and not worry about bothering a rider who
is trying to stay focused.

Is there any trick that haunts you?  Yes!  The Deathtruck…I don’t know what it
is…That trick has kicked my ass for years… I can do them all day at home.  Mark,
you know this… at Roundup II.  I had three flawless, touch free runs.  On my fourth
and final run, I decided to do the Death to Dumptruck (Stick-B).  I was clearing this
trick while dodging people on the practice floor.  I tried this trick three times on the
final run, and choked!  I gave up!  This is the “crazy” part; I was the last person, last
run, when Chris Balles announces “that’s it for the expert class”.  When it didn’t
count anymore, (except for myself, of course) I tried it again.  Guess what?  I
cleared it! (And I could hear the Deathtruck combo laughing at me!)
What do you see in the future of Flatland?  The future of
Flatland…  It comes and goes in spurts!  As far as
maneuvers, Mark Eaton captured the most regretted words
spoken to a Flatlander.  In one of his videos, he said to Kevin
Jones, (back in ’92, maybe) “What more can possibly be done
on a bike?” Look where we are now.  I love the whole “picking
up momentum” thing, which Terry Adams does!  Kick
flips/Turbines?  I don’t know? I see the future of Flatland
becoming VERY DIFFICULT…

Tell me about your worst crash ever?  My worst crash
ever?  Here we go again!  I was riding with my best friend Billy
Beebe.  I was getting into a Death truck, lost it and landed on
my face, knocking myself out! For about a minute.
(Concussion) My friend thought I was messing around!  I got it
all on VHS.  Maybe I can convert it for BMX Freestyler to see
and display?

Do you prefer to ride with or without music?  Prefer to
ride with music. (My trusty MP3)  There’s something about
putting those ear buds in after a bad day at work, or just a
bad day… You can’t explain it fully, unless you do it.  It’s my
way of meditating or venting!
What is your favorite link or trick?  My favorite link is on the old school side!  I just have to do it at comps and shows!  It’s fun. (That’s
what Flatland is all about, right?)  I hope I get this right…  Kick into a Hang 5, to Steamroller, to Funky Chicken, to Lard Yard, (spin the
bars) to Locomotive, back to Lard Yard, (no handed) then Smith Decade out!  I like this link, because it has every style in it.   Rolling
trick/Scuffing trick/Front tire and Back tire tricks, all in one

What is your favorite kind of music?  Hard rock! (System of a Down, Mudvayne, Kittie…)

What was the last DVD you watched?  A demo copy of the Chainlinkz video “me”, and Neon Media’s “Create”.   Stephen
Hearne is getting so good.  Terry is unreal.  Mickey/Eugene…that whole video is Holy Sh-t!

What link are you working on now?  I am working on a Crackpacker, (no-handed glide) step through and end up in a
Halfpacker Elephant Glide, throw into a Backpacker, (holding the peg) jump up and whip the bike 180ْ , and land a Hitchhiker.
(Pete Brandt style)

How many days out of the week do you ride?  I try to ride at least 2 to 3 days (at least 1 and ½ hours) a week.

What is your goal for 2007?  My goal for 2007 is to kick it up a notch!  Stay injury free.  No freak accidents like Art
Thomason. (He broke his leg)  The tricks I want are:  Turbine Cliffhangers, Backpacker to 180ْ jump into Hitchhiker, and a
Katrina.  Yep, you read right…a Katrina!

Any last Comments?  Last words?  This is where I need to thank all my sponsors.  Wait…I don’t have any, so I’ll start by
thanking my loved ones!  First my wife…for letting me ride with what little time I have.  She puts up with my aches and pains,
and minor injuries. (Cuts, burns and bruises) I don’t know where I’d be without you? 666!!  I want to thank my mom for not
“making” me play baseball, football, or just do anything that I didn’t want to do.  She let me pursue the sport of Flatland.
Mom/grandma for buying me my first bike, and it was all over with, I became addicted to flatland!!  I want to thank my cousin
Rod Rubio for introducing me to Flatland.  I remember having Jump rope contests in his garage, on his bright orange Haro
Master.  (Doing over 25 Jump ropes) I want to thank Jerry Silguero.  He started doing the hard tricks, and pushing us to
progress. (Doing “Big tricks”, like Cherry Pickers, Decades, Hang 5’s, and even Roll Aides!)  I also want to say “I love you” to
my daughter Angelica.  Daddy loves you very much.  I also want to thank Mr. Mark Dandridge for giving me an opportunity to
be a part of the BMX Freestyler family!  Thanks Flatland brother.  Now my message to everyone GO
RIDE!
